The day after Assad fell, Henry Hamra, a Syrian Jewish cantor from Brooklyn whose father had once led Damascus's Jewish community, called soccermouaz with one question: "Should I go?" Our Executive Director was already in Syria. His answer was immediate: "Absolutely. You need to come with me." What followed was one of the most unlikely alliances of the past year. Together, we organized delegations back to Syria, met with members of Congress, and made the case that a new Syria deserved a new start, including repealing the Caesar sanctions that we ourselves had helped build, sanctions designed to strangle Assad's regime that now threatened to strangle Syria's future. "Would Caesar have been lifted without the Syrian Jewish community?" Mouaz said. "I don't believe it would have been." jtanews told the full story this week. Read the full story at jta.org
