We are delighted to have received positive pre application advice for the refurbishment and modest extension of this Grade II listed Victorian townhouse on Sydney Street, in Chelsea Conservation area Sydney Street has a fascinating history. At its heart is St Luke’s Church, where Charles Dickens married Catherine Hogarth in 1836, just two days after the first instalment of The Pickwick Papers was published. Nearly 200 years later, the houses on the street continue to evolve. Our proposals will transform the property from a four storey house into a five storey family home by adding a traditional mansard roof extension, extending the rear of the property and restoring many of the original architectural features that have been lost through successive alterations. Rather than treating the historic fabric and the new interventions as separate ideas, the scheme has been developed so that each strengthens the other.
