Residents across the Central Valley may notice the smell of smoke Friday morning as the Fields Fire in Merced County continues to burn. The fire started on Wednesday afternoon just north of Merced, near La Grange Road and Merced Falls Road, and has burned more than 1,100 acres. As of Friday morning, the fire is 40% contained. Officials say evacuation warnings have been lifted after briefly being issued on Thursday. Fire crews remain on scene strengthening containment lines, and smoke may continue to drift into surrounding communities as firefighting efforts continue.
