#SharksOnRED with Lauren Romeiro (laurenromeiro333) Some of the most meaningful shark encounters last only a few seconds. This is one of my favorite photographs because it captures a juvenile porbeagle shark in the offshore waters of Nantucket, an encounter that is exceptionally rare. Young porbeagles spend the earliest years of their lives far offshore, making them incredibly difficult to study, observe, and photograph. I captured this image during one of our offshore research expeditions documenting the habitat use of blue, shortfin mako, and porbeagle sharks using non-invasive underwater camera systems. For a brief moment, this young shark came right up to the boat, giving us an unobstructed view before disappearing back into the open ocean. To me, this photograph represents why exploration and research matter.
