Day 8 of my training camp visual journal. After deciding that my work was feeling flat, I decided to try to rekindle my creative spark by posting a photo for every day of Seahawks training camp practices. Today, I was experimenting with “panning” - a photographic technique where you slow the shutter speed down, then follow your subject as it moves along the plane of focus. The goal is usually to either completely freeze the subject with the resulting surrounding blur adding a sense of motion, or to somewhat freeze the subject, which gives it a more “painterly” feel. On this play, running back Jadarian Price breaks through the line of scrimmage as linebacker Patrick O’Connell closes in. When I’m trying to freeze action, I try to shoot with a shutter speed of 1/2000th of second, but for this panning image, I slowed the shutter speed all the way down to 1/13 of a second to emphasize speed and motion.
