Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is surging more than 16% Thursday after a blowout fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report putting the stock on pace for its best single-day gain since October 2008.
Here are the key numbers: Revenue came in at $90 billion, ahead of the $87.6 billion analyst estimate. EPS hit $4.81, well above the $4.24 consensus. Azure and cloud services revenue jumped 43% year over year, the fastest growth since 2022, easing investor fears that massive AI spending wasn't translating into returns.
But the headline that most investors are missing: Microsoft's investment in Anthropic the AI company also backed by Google and Amazon generated a $3.2 billion gain in a single quarter. That windfall exceeded the entire $2.748 billion operating income of Microsoft's More Personal Computing division, which includes Windows, Surface, Xbox, and Bing combined.
