Editor zacpalmerr took the Mercedes-AMG E53 wagon on a camping trip to Colorado’s Rocky Mountains to determine whether the 604-hp two-box deserves a place in the station wagon hall of fame. The latest E53 is a plug-in hybrid with a 28.6-kWh battery pack under the cargo floor, which feeds a 161-hp electric motor that works in conjunction with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. But electric aid has more benefits than just acceleration. Zac made sure the battery was as close to 100 percent as possible before arriving at his campground, and proceeded to leave the car running in Electric mode all night while sleeping inside. With the climate control set to a comfy 67º, he woke with just over 50 percent charge remaining, which was plenty to start carving up the mountain roads before anyone else was awake.
