AtriCure, Inc. has hired 593 UC co-op students since 2013, 428 of them in biomedical engineering, making it UC's largest biomedical engineering co-op employer (University of Cincinnati College of Cooperative Education and Professional Studies). That pipeline started in 2001, when John Dreyer co-oped at AtriCure's forerunner as a mechanical engineering student. Today he's VP of Manufacturing Engineering, and the pattern he started keeps repeating: co-ops get treated as full employees from day one, and a striking number get hired full-time. AtriCure brought on 10 co-op students as full-time engineers this past year alone. We call it the Co-op Compounding Effect: each rotation builds on the last, turning a single work term into a multi-rotation career on-ramp.
