The protein craze has gone too far, and more is not always better. A 2024 Harvard study following nearly 49,000 people found that those who got more of their protein from plants in midlife were far more likely to reach old age healthy, with strong bodies and sharp minds. A sweeping 2026 review of more than 350 studies reached the same conclusion: most of us eat more protein than we need, and easing off can lower inflammation and switch on the body’s longevity pathways. Meanwhile the average American eats close to double what they need.
Here is the simple rule I use: about 3 grams of protein for every 10 pounds of body weight. So if you are 200 pounds, aim for around 60 grams a day, mostly from plants like beans, lentils, and tofu. You can dial it up a little later in life, after about 65.
Eat smarter now so you are still thriving at 100.
