How did John Glenn's "Friendship 7" capsule get its name? The number "7" was in the name of all of the Mercury spacecraft, honoring the original seven Mercury astronauts, and "Friendship" came from John Glenn's kids. Glenn asked them to think of a name that represented "our country and the way we feel about the rest of the world."
