#Opinion: On Aug. 4, Michigan voters will cast their ballots in the Congressional primary elections, selecting the Democratic and Republican nominees that will advance to the general elections in November. There are some key races on Michigan’s primary ballot this year, including the race for U.S. Senate. Unlike general elections, primaries often lack widespread public awareness and participation. On average, only 20% of nationwide voters participate in midterm primaries, much less than midterm general election turnout, which usually falls at about 50%. This is a result of several factors, including American voters’ false perception that primaries are lower-stakes, and therefore not necessary or important.
