Eleven platters. That is what fits inside a 3.5-inch HAMR drive at 4TB each, and it is how WD gets to 44TB in the first half of 2027. Every platter added means tighter mechanical tolerances, thinner disks, and less room for the head stack to settle, which is why platter count climbs so slowly compared to areal density.
The 40TB UltraSMR drive shipping today gets there a different way, with ePMR plus shingled recording rather than heat-assisted media. Different physics, similar capacity, and very different write behavior.
The number WD wants you to watch is not capacity at all. It is bandwidth: 8x by 2030 on the High Bandwidth Drive, currently sampling with five customers.
