The federal government just told colleges: if your graduates do not earn enough money, you lose federal funding. The Department of Education's new "do no harm" rule will cut federal student loan access for programs whose graduates do not out-earn people without a college degree. Starting in 2028, programs that fail the earnings test could be effectively shut down. The fields most at risk: cosmetology, early childhood education, social work, mental health counseling, and arts programs. Think about what that means for our community. Black women make up a disproportionate share of the social work, early education, and caregiving workforce. These are not low-value fields. They are the fields holding communities together. "We know we need nurses. We know we need journalists. We know we need early childhood educators," said one education advocate.
