Leaf. It’s what’s for dinner. Fun fact: Banana slugs can have up to 27,000 teeth. That seems excessive for an animal whose main hobby is slowly eating a leaf in the woods. With that many teeth, you might think banana slugs are either a terrifying land monster or a dentist’s worst nightmare, but don’t worry, the banana slug isn’t coming for you…unless you deserve it. You stepped on my mushroom. Prepare to slime! Those tiny teeth are called denticles, and they’re not really teeth in the way we understand teeth. Banana slugs use them to scrape up fungi, plants, and decaying vegetation. Basically, they’re nature’s slowest lawnmowers. They don’t chew. They just gently sandpaper their dinner until it becomes food. So yes, the banana slug has thousands of teeth. But thankfully, it uses them for salad…not revenge.
