On 9/11 and throughout the nine-month rescue and recovery effort, more than 3,000 members of the Transport Workers Union (TWU) answered the call to assist. They immediately began to search for victims at Ground Zero while driving thousands of people to safety. They also transported vital equipment and emergency workers to the disaster scene, and assessed and restored critical transit systems damaged when the Towers collapsed. Featured are: A hard hat worn by MTA signal maintainer and TWU Local 100 officer Dominick Spagnolo, who spent months monitoring conditions in damaged subway tunnels and advocating for worker safety.
