In 1896, a 15 year old Pablo Picasso painted himself with soft eyes and boyish hair. Seventy six years later, his final self portrait had become something almost unrecognisable, with terrified bulging eyes and a face carved up by frantic lines.
Titled “Self Portrait Facing Death,” Picasso created it while living almost completely isolated in Mougins at the age of 90. His friend Pierre Daix later said Picasso appeared to be “staring his own death in the face.” Less than a year later, on April 8, 1973, Picasso died at 91.
