Is your inventory strategy built for the customer you want, or the customer you have?
CarMax is betting on the latter, chasing lower-priced, higher-mileage cars to meet an affordability crisis.
Wall Street hates it. But your customers might love it.
Start here:
1. Pull your turn rates for sub-$25k vehicles vs. $40k+ vehicles. Where is the real velocity?
2. Analyze your lost deals from the last 60 days. How many walked because you didn't have a car in their budget, not because of the payment on a specific unit?
3. What percentage of your service customers are driving vehicles you'd never stock, but would gladly buy if they were on your lot today?
The data will show you the gap between your ideal inventory and your market's reality.
Closing that gap is uncomfortable. It means re-evaluating sourcing, re-underwriting risk, and potentially accepting thinner per-unit margins for faster turns.
What does your dealership's data tell you?
