Those darn Canadians just handed shoppers a $25K benchmark.
Canada is moving to allow up to 49,000 Chinese-built EVs into the country each year at a much lower tariff, with eligibility tied to a price around $30,000 CAD (about $25,000 USD).
When that first $25K EV hits the market and people see what “$25K” can look like in 2026, you do not get to unring that bell.
Because the next negotiation starts at $25K.
“So why is this one more?”
“What am I really getting for the extra money?”
“Is the gap product, brand, incentives… or margin?”
And the industry pushback is real too: no guaranteed local investment, plus open questions around certification and cybersecurity standards.
Do you think this stays a Canada-only experiment, or does it become the irreversible negotiating point for EV shoppers across North America?
