Looking at this image today, you may think it’s a traditional scene of motherhood, but when Mary Cassatt painted it in 1907, audiences found it daring. As one of the few women and the only American to exhibit with the Impressionists, Cassatt forged a distinctly modern vision centered on the lives of women and children. Her depictions of family life elevated domestic and maternal experiences into one of the defining subjects of modern art.
