Around 400 BCE, the Greek philosopher Democritus proposed that everything in the universe is made of tiny, indivisible particles called atomos, meaning uncuttable. He believed these particles were eternal, solid, and constantly moving through empty space. Different materials existed because atoms varied in shape, size, and arrangement. Although his idea lacked experimental evidence and was not scientifically proven, it became the earliest concept that inspired the development of modern atomic theory.
