A conversation this week said a lot about where junior basketball in QLD is right now.
Honest take: the talent level in the younger age groups, particularly U12–U16 is the lowest I’ve personally seen in 10 years. The depth just isn’t there across the board.
But here’s what worries me more: the gap between where a lot of players and parents think they’re at, and where they actually are, is bigger than I’ve ever seen it.
A big part of that comes down to what people are being fed. Social media posts from people who don’t know what they’re talking about. “Trainers” who look the part but don’t actually understand player development. Confidence built on hype instead of evidence.
Perspective is one of the most important things in a young athlete’s development. Not to tear anyone down, and parents aren’t doing anything wrong, and players aren’t either. It’s that the information they’re surrounded by is saturated with mediocrity dressed up as expertise.
