Before Good Will Hunting made them household names, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were two broke actors desperately trying to get their script made.
Studios kept passing on the project, so they rewrote it to include a role they hoped only one person could play: Robin Williams.
At the time, Williams was one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, reportedly earning around $20 million per film. But after reading the script, he understood exactly what Damon and Affleck were trying to do and agreed to star for a reported $5 million instead.
The gamble paid off in the biggest way possible. Good Will Hunting became a critical and commercial hit, Damon and Affleck won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and Williams picked up the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the only Oscar of his acting career.
