In a landmark lawsuit, indigenous leader Mike Smith took New Zealand’s biggest corporate polluters to court over their climate damage.⁣ ⁣ The polluters tried to get the case thrown out, but the Supreme Court unanimously ruled it could proceed to trial.⁣ ⁣ But then, New Zealand’s government introduced an emergency law to retroactively wipe out Mike's lawsuit and ban the public from ever suing big emitters.⁣ ⁣ Mike hasn’t given up.
