One minute, you are witnessing the end of someone’s life. The next, another patient needs you to walk into the room calm, focused and reassuring.
There is often no pause between those moments. No real time to process what happened, speak about it or let your body catch up before the work continues.
Healthcare workers become very skilled at carrying difficult experiences quietly. But grief, shock and emotional exhaustion do not disappear simply because another patient is waiting.
Over time, those moments can build. They can affect sleep, concentration, relationships and the ability to feel fully present, both at work and at home.
Supporting healthcare workers means creating space to debrief after difficult cases, building teams where people feel safe enough to admit when they are struggling, and recognising that repeated exposure to loss has a real human cost.
