Black History Month Artist Highlight: Emmett McBain was a Chicago-based designer who sought for representation of Black Americans in advertisements during the 1960’s. McBain’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to creating McBain Associates and later Burrell-McBain Inc. with Thomas Burrell. Following a successful Malbro campaign, Burrell-McBain Inc. partnered with McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, and eventually became America’s largest Black-owned advertising agency. After leaving the advertising industry, McBain remained active in the Black Arts Movement by opening a gallery and supporting programs or scholarships that promoted Black artists.
