One of Idaho's most remarkable landmarks wasn't built without a single nail.
Tucked just off I-90 between Coeur d'Alene and Wallace, Cataldo Mission at Coeur d'Alene's Old Mission State Park has stood since 1853โmore than three decades before Idaho achieved statehood. Built through the collaboration of Jesuit missionaries and members of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, it's the oldest standing building in Idaho and one of the state's most significant historic landmarks.
Constructed with hand-hewn timbers, wooden pegs, and remarkable craftsmanship, the mission has endured for more than 170 years.
Today, you can step inside the beautifully preserved church, explore exhibits in the visitor center, and learn about the people and stories that shaped this corner of Idaho. It's the kind of unexpected roadside stop that reminds you Idaho's history is every bit as compelling as its mountains, lakes, and waterfalls.
History lovers, don't skip this stop on I-90. ๐ in bio
