I had the chance to pace my friend Sam for 27 miles of the Crazy Mountain 100 mile ultramarathon through Montana’s rugged Crazy Mountains. This also happened to be my peak training week for the Swiss Alps 100 Miler, just two weeks before race day, making it the perfect long day on tired legs!
Sam has an incredible story. Before ultrarunning, he was a World Champion natural bodybuilder, winning 16 of 21 competitions and earning the world title in 2017. He finished the Crazy Mountain 100 in 2024 in 33:25, came back the following year but DNF’d at mile 80 after racing Bighorn 100 just four weeks earlier, and returned this year with one goal: break 30 hours.
Beyond his accomplishments, Sam is one of the kindest and most humble people I know, and it was an honor to help him chase his goal.
I hope you enjoy the adventure! If you like ultrarunning, mountain adventures, and 100-mile training, be sure to subscribe.
