Maria Tallchief (1925-2013) was not only America’s first prima ballerina, but the first Native American prima ballerina
She was an original dancer at the New York City Ballet. She danced to acclaim in both classical ballets like Swan Lake, and more modern pieces choreographed by her husband George Balanchine.
She was the first Sugarplum fairy in the modern rendition of The Nutcracker.
