August 5th is National Underwear Day! In honor of today, Howard letterpress printed some unmentionables from the Lewis Winter Collection. This is one of our most scandalous print shop videos so far. These hand carved woodcuts, depicting some undergarments, were made by Lewis Winter in the 1890s. Winter had a wood and photo engraving business at 627 J Street in Sacramento from 1888 to 1910. Many of the cuts in his collection are of clothing items predominantly used for advertising purposes for local newspapers and catalogs. This was printed with blue rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #SacHistoryMuseum #underwear #museumtok #printing #ootd
