for one reason, the words “have you heard of marugame castle?” haunts me and everybody else from the study abroad trip. we did visits to various schools for some cultural exchange and help japanese students with their english, and all three classes prepared presentations on marugame castle. all of us, all day, listened to these middle schoolers give us the same presentation one after the other, and we had to act like it was our first time. each. time. it became an inside joke where we would ask each other if we had ever heard of marugame castle, and then recite the facts that we were told by the students verbatim. when i was in the takamatsu airport bathroom, i was jumpscared by an english brochure taped to the inside of the stall with “welcome to marugame!” stamped right on the front. as if god itself were taunting me in my delirious, running on 2-hour sleep state.
