Released through No Limit Records and Priority Records, the album was Snoop’s first after leaving Death Row Records earlier that year. It also represented a dramatic shift from the West Coast sound of his first two albums, with longtime collaborators like #DrDre, #NateDogg and #WarrenG largely absent and No Limit artists taking center stage. While the album received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and is often considered one of the weaker releases in Snoop’s catalog, its commercial success told a different story. Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 520,000 copies in its first week.
