A Somerton Middle School teacher is facing multiple felony charges after an unattended makeup bag was discovered on campus.
According to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, a staff member found the bag in an area accessible to students and opened it to determine who it belonged to. Authorities say the employee discovered an illegal substance inside and linked the bag to teacher Deana Salter.
Salter was arrested Monday on three felony charges, including reckless child abuse. Investigators said that charge was filed because students could have accessed the bag, although no students were nearby when it was found. Officials also said no paraphernalia or other dangerous items were discovered inside.
The Somerton School District said student and staff safety remains its top priority but has not confirmed whether Salter is still employed. She has since been released by judicial order and is scheduled to return to court on August 24.
