Pinal County is removing its Flock Safety license plate camera system.
Sheriff Ross Teeple announced Wednesday that the county will not renew its contract with Flock Safety when it expires at the end of September. He said his concerns are no longer about license plate readers themselves, but how advances in AI have changed what the technology is capable of, raising privacy concerns.
The sheriff’s office says the system has helped in around 30 investigations since 2023, including finding suspects and assisting in missing person cases. Searches require a case number, can be audited, and data is automatically deleted after 30 days.
This only affects the 45 cameras operated by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. Cities and towns with their own Flock programs can continue using them, and there is still no statewide policy in Arizona.
Do you think license plate cameras like these are worth it?
