The dust storm rolled through the Valley Monday night. By 10:45 a south Phoenix block was burning.
Phoenix Fire got the call for a single power pole on fire near 7th Street and Southern Avenue. By the time crews pulled up, multiple poles were burning and heavy winds were shoving the flames straight into nearby buildings.
Three structures went fully involved along with brush, trees, debris and the poles themselves. Capt. DJ Lee said the size of the fire and the wind forced crews to call for more firefighters and resources. They worked handlines from several angles and boxed it in before it could take more of the block.
One neighbor told Arizona’s Family he got a call saying there might be a fire near his mom’s house. He came outside, saw the blaze, and got his elderly mother out.
All three buildings that burned were vacant and nobody was hurt. Dozens of homes lost power, and SRP expected the area fully restored by 7am Tuesday.
