What is the Geluk tradition in Tibetan Buddhism? It's one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, alongside the Nyingma, Sakya, and Kagyu traditions, and the largest and most influential of the four. Although each school possesses its own histories, teachers, and ritual practices, they are all united by a commitment to the Buddhist path of wisdom and compassion and share common roots in Indian Buddhist teachings brought to Tibet between the 8th and 13th centuries. Among the most influential Indian Buddhist masters was Atisha Dipamkara Shrijnana who visited Tibet in 1042 CE. The Geluk tradition adopted Atisha's emphasis on monastic discipline, scholastic study, and a gradual path to awakening.
