STEP 4: DON’T SEARCH. This may be the simplest step of all. If you don’t search, you don’t find. For years, hundreds of people have died in the desert of Doña Ana County. Yet where is the systematic search effort? Where are the deputies walking the desert? Where are the organized searches after remains are discovered? Where is the effort to determine whether more people died nearby? We search. Civilian volunteers. On our own time. With our own equipment. Spending our own money. We walk mile after mile because we know something painfully obvious: You cannot find the dead if you refuse to look for them. And sometimes we find one site. Sometimes two. Sometimes three or four in a single day. We document what we find. We photograph it. We record GPS coordinates. We report it. And still, there have been reported sites where deputies didn't come.
