Hollywood’s rebound has reached a cinematic scale of its own, with theatergoers turning out in droves for summer blockbusters like The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Toy Story 5, along with low-budget breakthroughs Obsession and Backrooms. 2026 is shaping up to be the highest-grossing year since the pandemic, with more than $6.2 billion in domestic box office sales to date. The industry record of $11.8 billion, set in 2018, may be within reach. While streaming remains hugely popular, Americans are clearly embracing the big screen experience in numbers not seen in years. Now, another classic big screen in Los Angeles is poised to make a comeback. Toronto-based exhibitor Riu Pereira recently signed a lease with the Skouras family to reopen and operate the famed Bruin Theater in Westwood Village, which has hosted hundreds of movie premieres over its 90-year history.
