I used to think confidence was the missing piece.
So I spent the week before her move to a new school doing everything right - encouragement, talking it through, helping her believe she could do the hard thing.
And she did believe it.
Right up until one appointment full of “what ifs” undid it in 45 minutes.
Here’s what I didn’t understand yet: her body doesn’t file a worst-case scenario as hypothetical. It files it as incoming.
You can’t talk a nervous system out of an alarm it’s already sounding, no matter how good the pep talk is.
I’d already tried the cognitive-first way - the strategies, the structured plans, the talking-it-through.
It helped her cope - to a point. But it never touched the alarm underneath.
The order matters.
Calm first.
Then the hard conversations land, instead of landing on top of a system that’s already braced for danger.
