Thousands took to the streets across Pakistan on Friday as Jamaat-e-Islami led protests against the government’s petroleum levy.
Demonstrations in Karachi and Lahore disrupted traffic, with the party’s chief, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, calling for the levy - a fixed tax imposed on petrol, diesel and kerosene - to be abolished.
Rehman warned that the protests could escalate into nationwide road blockades, with major highways from Karachi to Chitral potentially affected.
The campaign is also targeting what protesters describe as the “IPP mafia”: independent power producers they accuse of costing the country billions.
