The United States has revoked the visa of Brazil's ambassador to Washington, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, in what the State Department described as a "reciprocal action" after Brazil denied visas to two US officials last month.
The move marks a further escalation in tensions between Washington and Brasília ahead of Brazil's upcoming elections. A State Department spokesperson said the decision does not amount to expelling the ambassador but warned that "additional diplomatic options remain on the table."
Brazil blocked the US officials' visit after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva accused them of attempting to interfere in the country's electoral process. Washington rejected the allegation as "baseless."
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated in recent months amid disputes over US tariffs, the designation of Brazilian gangs as terrorist organizations, and disagreements over election-related issues.
