Spanish soldiers halted the return of a 12-year-old unaccompanied Moroccan boy at the Ceuta border after local residents intervened, highlighting the growing humanitarian challenges following the recent migrant surge.
The Associated Press witnessed the child crying and pleading not to be sent back to Morocco as he was escorted toward the border.
Just metres from the crossing, a Spanish army lieutenant colonel stopped the repatriation after residents pointed out that the boy was a minor. He was then handed over to Spain's Civil Guard.
