Day 14 of Seahawks training camp, and another chance to challenge my vision, refine old techniques, experiment with new ones, and simply try to get better at my craft.
This daily visual journal of camp started as a personal challenge: make one interesting, storytelling image each day, get myself out of a creative rut, and sharpen my vision heading into the season.
In this frame, defensive lineman Jared Ivey explodes from a low position — “with his hand in the dirt” — working on firing out of his stance to engage a blocker. The shaded structure at the right of the frame forces him to stay low and use his legs to generate power with that first explosive burst.
I knew I wanted to photograph this from a low angle for a couple of reasons. First, putting the camera near the ground emphasizes just how low he starts. Second, a low vantage point can make an athlete feel even more powerful, strong and imposing in the frame.
But I wasn’t about to lie down on the grass that close to the drill....
