Today I watched Troy fall. I'd been standing in it. Slide 1 is my cinema screen. Everything after are photographs took by me while i was at there.For The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan didn't build Troy on a soundstage. He built it on Aït Benhaddou a real fortified village of packed earth in southern Morocco, on the old caravan road to the Sahara. The site has been fortified since the 11th century. UNESCO listed it in 1987. His team raised around 60 structures against those walls, the city gates, a pillared Temple of Athena roughly 2.5 acres of Troy. Hoyte van Hoytema lit it with banks of portable LEDs and very carefully contained fire, and they shot it on 70mm IMAX. Then they burned it down. I've walked those alleys. Same red earth, packed by hand and re-packed after every rain. No stone. No steel. Just the ground it stands on. The film gave it a name that has echoed for three thousand years.
