For generations, Radio Mogadishu gave Somalia a shared soundtrack. Its airwaves carried music, poetry, news and stories that became part of everyday life and part of the country’s collective memory. Today, thousands of those recordings are at risk of disappearing. Through UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme–JFIT initiative, funded by the Government of Japan, one of East Africa’s most significant audio collections is being digitized and preserved for future generations. Every tape saved keeps a voice alive. Every recording protected helps future generations discover the people, culture and stories that shaped their country.
