Did you know mangroves can help protect coastlines from hurricanes? When Hurricane Iota struck Colombia’s Providencia Island in 2020, the mangroves of UNESCO’s Seaflower Biosphere Reserve helped shield homes, boats and livelihoods. Today, through the MangRes project, supported by the Government of Flanders, the Raizal community is leading the restoration of these mangrove forests, bringing together scientific expertise and generations of local knowledge. On this #MangroveDay, we’re giving you a first look at #WeAreNature, an international campaign by UNESCO and jcdecauxglobal featuring photographers from around the world who are telling inspiring conservation stories from UNESCO #BiosphereReserves. This first story comes to life through the lens of photographer Federico Rios Escobar, who travelled to Providencia Island to meet the Raizal community.
