In this room, memory is stored on tape. 🎙️ For decades, the Radio Mogadishu archive has held voices, music, poetry and stories that shaped Somalia’s modern history. But memory can disappear. Time, climate and fragile analogue formats threaten recordings that carry pieces of a nation’s story. Yet these archives are more than collections of sound, they preserve identity, culture and connections across generations. Because archives are not only about the past. They help people understand where they come from, reconnect with their heritage and keep cultural memory alive. By safeguarding and digitising one of East Africa’s most significant audio archives, these voices can continue speaking to future generations. Through UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme-JFIT initiative, funded by the Government of Japan (japangov_official), this work is helping protect Somalia’s documentary heritage and preserve its cultural memory for the future. #ForThePeople #MemoryOfTheWorld
