Uganda is famous for its gorilla trekking, but travel a little north and you’ll find Kibale National Park - home to more than 1,500 wild chimpanzees.
Only a small number of these have been habituated - a careful process carried out over years that allows them to become accustomed to the presence of humans without becoming domesticated.
Permits are expensive, visitor numbers are strictly controlled and, on a standard trek, you get just one hour with the chimpanzees once you find them.
This is a reason I feel differently about wildlife tourism in Uganda!
Uganda has built tourism into its conservation model. Instead of wildlife tourism and conservation working against each other, the value of seeing these animals alive, wild and in their natural habitats helps create an economic reason to protect them.
