🌿 The votes are in, and the Zoo’s newest baby gorilla has a name: Usala!
The winning name received more than 1,300 votes, with just under 3,000 people voting across all three name options last week. Usala (Oo-sa-la) means “forest” in the Kikumu language and is also the name of a conservation corridor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that helps connect important gorilla habitats.
As only the second baby gorilla born in the Zoo’s 98-year history, this is a moment worth celebrating — and it means even more knowing how many members of the community wanted to be part of choosing her name. Thank you to every visitor who stopped by, cast a vote and helped select a name rooted in conservation.
Didn’t get a chance to meet the baby last week? Stop by soon to visit the gorilla troop and say hello to little Usala! 🦍
