After LSU gave sophomore CB DJ Pickett the No. 5 jersey, the same number Daniels wore during his Heisman-winning 2023 season, Daniels’ family reportedly felt “profoundly disrespected.”
Then things escalated.
Daniels’ attorney sent LSU a cease-and-desist demanding the school stop using his name, image and likeness, arguing LSU’s contractual rights to his NIL expired 180 days after his final college game.
Here’s where I think TWO things can be true:
🏆 LSU probably should treat No. 5 differently after what Daniels accomplished.
🤝 But DJ Pickett was reportedly promised No. 5 during his recruitment, and the number was never officially retired.
💰 And if LSU’s rights to Daniels’ NIL really expired? That’s a completely different conversation. Protect your name and protect your money.
