Video by joelsartore | Did someone say 18k? I’m thrilled to announce the 18,000th species to join the Photo Ark: the red handfish. As its name implies, this species belongs to a family of fish that walk with their oversize “hands” rather than swim. No bigger than my thumb, the handfish takes an entire year to cover a distance equivalent to that of a standard basketball court. It is considered one of the rarest fishes on Earth, with fewer than 250 individuals left in the wild. Habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and human disturbance are the main threats to the recovery of the red handfish population. This video was taken imas_utas.
